The American Red Cross predicts that one-third of Haiti’s 9 million people may need help. Many organizations and individuals world wide are mobilizing to assist the victims.
Recovering from such a crisis will take years, donations are needed not only for immediate rescue operations, but also for reconstruction efforts that will continue for years to come.
It's a shame how the misadventures of wallstreet, and the consequential drop in charitable donations are hurting the most needy people of the world
The American Red Cross has a number of suggestions of how you can help. including donating blood, volunteering, or donating to the relief fund.
The quickest way you help Haiti relief effort is through your mobile phone! Just text “HAITI” to 90999 to donate $10 to American Red Cross relief for Haiti. The donation will be charged to your cellphone bill. This number was setup in part by the U.S. State Department, you can validate it's legitimacy at the Red Cross newsroom.
This new method of collecting donations received $21 Million in the first days, all parties involved in processing the transaction are waiving fees. As a rule cell phone account based donations are not transferred until you pay your cell phone bill, in light of the urgent situation in Haiti, some companies are advancing the donation.

The Salvation Army, who have had facilities in Haiti for years also is accepting cell phone donations:
Text Haiti to 52000 to make an immediate donation of $10 to the Salvation Army, they promise 100% of the donation will be used for disaster relief.
